The Animal Safari

“Look, we’ve got work we need to do today, it can’t be put off.” Kodiak said as the group broke up and went in separate directions. “Just chill out and rest for now, we can go into town tomorrow to get the truck, we’re due for a supply run anyway.”

He stood on the porch and watched in fascination as the children swung astride bears and wolves obeyed commands like the best-trained dogs. The silent boy kept to the shadows with his silky black panther and observed them. Jessie got the feeling he was probably the most ruthless in the group. He still hadn’t heard him utter a word. A signal passed between Kodiak and the boy, an “I think we can trust him,” signal and the two dark figures slipped from the porch. The Asian kid took off in a jog, the panther keeping pace and they were soon out of sight over the nearest rise.

“Take it easy today,” Kodiak said, “cause buddy, you really do look like hell. Murray can show you around the shops and garages so you can get an idea of what we have to get the truck started if it won’t crank in town. We can tow it back with Millie.”

“Sounds good.” Jessie said. “Appreciate it.”

The boy nodded and set off towards the barns.

“So it’s just you and me today.” Murray said as he wheeled his chair onto the porch. “You wanna tell me what this is?”

He held up the titanium belt with the buttons and knobs and LED display screens. He had been puzzling over it for days. There was no place to put a battery, the numbers didn’t change and it felt substantial. It was very well built and obviously a custom job. It wasn’t a timer, no matter what he fiddled with none of the digits changed.

“Movie prop.” Jessie said. “Pretty cool, huh?”

Murray held his gaze and didn’t smile.

“Do I look dumb to you?”

Jessie stared right back as they evaluated each other. After the hubbub of curious animals and children, the questions both serious and silly, the laughter at breakfast and the rush to do their chores, he and the boy quietly took each other’s measure. Two survivors. One a warrior, one the brains behind a thriving community of kids.

“No, you don’t.” Jessie finally answered. “But some things are secret and are best kept that way.”

“You’re not from Canada. From the accent, I’d say somewhere down south. You’re not scouting for a new home, either are you?”

Jessie shook his head.

“And you didn’t get so beat up by falling out of a tree.”

Silence.

“You’re not going to tell me who you are.” Murray said flatly. “Was anything you said true?”

“Some of it.” Jessie said. “I mean you no harm, I got a little lost, but I need to be on my way. I could use the truck they were talking about; it would save me a lot of time but I’ll leave right now if you think it’s best.”

Murray considered the stranger.
